GCSE Options - Pathways
The GCSE Options Pathways process begins in the summer term of Year 9 ready to commence the KS4 curriculum in Year 10.
At GCSE all pupils study:
- English Language
- English Literature
- Mathematics
- Science (Double or Triple Award)
In addition, pupils at Alderwood are able to study four optional subjects at KS4.

There are three Options Pathways at Alderwood:
- The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) Pathway: History or Geography / French or German / Free Choice / Free Choice
- The Progress 8 Pathway: History, Geography, French, German or Computing / Free Choice / Free Choice / Free Choice
- The PSD Pathway: History, Geography, French, German or Computing / Personal and Social Development / Free Choice / Free Choice
All pupils also continue with Physical Education (PE), Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) including Relationships and sex education (RSE), and Religious Education (RE) although these subjects are not examined and are not awarded a qualification.
Please note that the specific Pathways are assigned to pupils in Year 9 as part of the process and that the numbers on the PSD Pathway are strictly limited.
